Ahh ignorance is bliss.

Proportionality is a great concept but often so unworkable in practice. Let's say that liability is admitted immediately but causation is not. 2 experts are need (each side) with questions, agendas, court action, procedural requirements and so on. Counsel will be involved. All of that takes time and money. factor in a success fee 9set at the outset when you don't know if a case will even run) and ATE and bingo £32k.

Or it could have been the case that liability was resolved early, quantum was disputed a bit and the case settled relatively quickly. In that case proportionality goes to the issues and the bill is rightly slashed.

Just imagine what the costs will be for a Hillsborough claim for the fatality of a 19 year old. No bereavement award, funeral expenses only (probably now a small claims track case) but think of the costs of dealing with it. Does £90 sound about right?
