I believe there should be a trainee minimum salary. Without it in my view firms will simply exploit trainees and pay the smallest amount whilst expecting the trainees to take on a huge level of responsibility.

I have my own practice and do offer training contracts. I also believe in the Apprenticeship Scheme. As a profession we need to encourage people into the profession. I qualified by the traditional route and if I had not had the minimum salary I would have financially struggled even more than what I did. In all honesty I do not know whether I would have even qualified.

I also want to state in response to the comment that trainees cannot generate £75k in a High Street. I generated £100k as a trainee in a High Street practice in one year!! It all depends on how much time and responsibility you are willing to give to a trainee.

Trainees are an asset to a firm and should be treated as such. If you treat them right at the outset you have more chance in instilling loyalty.
