If the bench (as we are repeatedly told) must reflect our society the number of BAME judges at 7% (with 12% under 50) seems to me to hit the mark as reflective of the percentage of BAME people in this country. Surely to have more than that would create an imbalance and we would then need to have a recruitment drive to appoint white judges. Its seems we have it about right - well done MoJ. The principal imbalance, which is never addressed, is the failure of the bench to reflect the legal profession, which is predominantly made up of solicitors or to reflect a non-Oxbridge and public school bias. Let's hear more on that Lord Thomas.
