Quite correct, Martin and Anon 10.00. What bodies like Liberty forget is that their arcane, academic type arguments may be all right in the classroom, but elsewhere there is a 'context'. Given that they appear rarely to have worked in such a 'context' they can be forgiven to some extent. But they should be made to go out on the beat for a few nights with the London police and maybe they would wake up.

And now that we are at war with IS, thanks to New Labour, well Tony Blair anyway, the forces of law and order and other arms of the security services can have all the powers they say they want so far as I am concerned. You can only have 'pure' liberty if you have 'pure' freedom from any kind of threat. This, of course, we shall never have. I for one do not write emails, have telephone conversations, etc etc of which I would be ashamed and anyone who wants to can read or listen to them. If you have nothing to hide why would you say otherwise?
