Regarding the 'battle of the sexes' posts, whilst it is very true that women can be abusers too, there is a cultural issue here. Women have traditionally been silent victims of abuse. Until the lat60s/early 70s there was no way an abused woman could get help from the courts. Lawyers and police simply sent them home to suffer further abuse. I was involved in setting up a refuge in the 70s and spoke to a lot of supposedly socially aware organisations the members of which displayed an astonishing level of ignorance on the subject. Many people suggested the women 'deserved' to be abused. Only this month a cardinal has suggested women are only abused because they disobey their husbands. More than one deputy district judge has told me they don’t think taking action to protect women victims of domestic abuse does any good at all. We have to bear in mind the fact that the history of the repression of women in our culture permeates the historical record from the very beginning.
So men being abused does not carry the same history and is thus less likely to be central in any report such as this one.
