Anon 2.53 you write as if the Tories inherited a clean sheet. They did not. They inherited an economy ruined by Blair, Brown, Darling, et al. They inherited the legacy of two wars. They inherited PPF 'initiatives' for the building and leasing of hospitals and schools (invariably in Labour or marginal constituencies). They inherited an infrastructure which had been neglected. They inherited a chaotic immigration scenario. They inherited a commitment to Europe which is costing us an arm and a leg. They inherited a Banking Act which prevented the Governor of the BofE from rescuing Northern Rock in the traditional way.

The fact that under the Tories the debt and the deficit have grown worse just proves how bad these legacies were. Just imagine how much worse things would have been had the cuts and belt tightening not taken place.

This country was brought to its knees by Labour.
