I agree with anonymous 08:42 as put like that. I wasn't aware that the civil courts were subsidising the criminal courts.

I also agree with Simon Walton at 10:26, but however you divide up the burden I continue to maintain that the civil courts should be self funding.

It follows that the real argument is whether the civil courts should be subsidising the criminal courts, not whether the (potentially recoverable) court fees in civil cases impede access to justice.

All fees, whether payable to the court or to a solicitor, will impede access to justice, and the higher the costs, (all costs, not just court fees), the more likely people will think twice about commencing legal proceedings in the civil courts ... or defending them.
