I got a letter from the FOS last week on a PPI claim we are doing. It says "Thank you for bearing with us whilst we consider your complaint. We hope to be able to deal quickly, but unfortunately we have to confirm that it is unlikely we will review your file for at least 18 months. We will update you again in three to six months' time".

NB The claim was put to the bank and rejected almost two years ago.

The idea that PPI claims involve just phoning your "friendly, helpful bank" and saying "could I have the money back you stole from me, if you don't mind, please" is simply untrue.

Yes, some do payout, but most don't.

As has been said above - if the bank's don't like it, simple. Just send a cheque to each and every PPI customer. There is precedent for this. My wife was contacted by something called "Affinion" which had a pointless rip-off product to protect your credit card from fraud (whilst omitting to point out that it was the bank's liability to protect from fraud anyway). A few months ago, they wrote and said "we've probably mis-sold you. Fill in this form and we'll pay you out." One-page form filled in, cheque received. Simple.
