I'm an outsider, not in law, and until this week I hadn't been aware of the proposed changes to probate fees. A few minutes reading made me realise that the fee pre 2014 was £45, then it rose at least four-fold to £155/£215 (depending on who made the application), and now, two years later, it is set to rise stratospherically. Millions of people (according to the national press) will be faced with significant charges, which become (IMO) grossly excessive on a £500k estate, which means most estates in the South East of England. Since the MoJ has seen fit to make TWO huge increases in TWO years, I can only conclude that there is no reason to expect them to stop at that!

Apparently this is at present a proposal and there is supposed to be consultation before it is enacted.... So, as a non-lawyer, I ask you, just how do we effectively challenge such an unjust action, or should we all just stand back, whinge a bit and let it happen? In very many other aspects of our lives, we can effectively challenge bad decisions, sometimes achieving a permanent change to a proposal, sometimes inflicting delay, which might run to years.
Who is 'leading the charge' on this issue? What are the strongest arguements on which to oppose the change? How do we make our feelings felt in a way that might actually achieve something? Stangely, none of the reports I have read say anything at all about opposing the proposal!
