Being a professional McKenzie friend I see this as the typical behaviour of a profession trying to protect it's self interest in the face of reasonably priced competition. The vast majority of MF's are decent, legally qualified persons who are responsible. There are rogue barristers and solicitors but the whole professions should not be tarred by a few individuals. I suspect in reality that the expensive lawyers are worried about losing slices of the pie, just like the bruhaha about Tesco Law. There would be fewer McKenzie Friends and more solicitors and barristers is the profession would take on trainees and pupils in greater numbers rather than crying wolf about legitimate competition. What are you scared of?
