An interesting point D Crawford. I had my secondary education in Llandudno, John Bright Grammar School, where Welsh was compulsary for the first 3 years. Only fluent Welsh speakers took O level Welsh. It was my best subject but I was forced to learn French.
My mother's father had Welsh beaten out of him in school near Ebbw Vale. His beatings were that bad that he refused to teach my mother and her sisters Welsh. This meant that my mother could not communicate or play with her grandparents. That is how Welsh speakers were treated in Wales.
