What is the problem to which fixed costs are the solution? I suggest it's judicial incomprehension that solicitors actually do anything other than prepare trial bundles. Therefore, they must be reined in. This perception might change as more barristers (mostly the less successful and least influential ones) do direct access work but it will take at least another fifty years for the penny to drop. Meanwhile, for those who don't act for institutional or wealthy clients, you/we are screwed.
