Having now read the posts that refer to the daughter having lost her dad to an industrial accident at a young age, I feel even stronger now that daughter may possibly be getting judged to harshly on here for her choices in life.

It is not uncommon for children to become rejected by one parent following the sudden death of the other and so this story may well be such a case.

If so it is again not uncommon for a rejected child to go through their life blindly searching for the love that they did not receive from their parents I.e the lost love from the one that died and the lost love from the one that survived but rejected them.

the judge having seen the whole case file would have in no doubt come to such a conclusion too if it showed any signs of this and so this maybe why a % of her mothers estate was subsequently then handed over to the daughter which I personally think was the right and morally correct thing for the judge to have done.
