Mr Cockshutt, as an arrant and lifelong "outer" I can assure you that I (and I imagine most people who think as I do) don't make any assumptions whatever as to the balance of purely economic advantage, in or out. We only know that we don't feel any allegiance to an entity loosely termed "Europe" - in the sense that a Vermonter feels the USA to be a more potent object of loyalty than Vermont - and we neither expect nor want to develop such a feeling. The true "cost" of remaining in the EU is, primarily, the commitment to all the potential consequences which national allegiance entails; and secondarily, acceptance in advance of all laws, decisions and policies emanating from a super-government in respect of which the people of this country can have no democratic control or right of appeal.
