Even for a firm with 40 solicitors, a case with £200,000+ at stake for the defendant would have been a major case, and having missed the first deadline, you would think they should have moved heaven and earth to get the PTC in before the extended date.

There is no excuse for this, it's just sloppy unprofessionalism from the so-called professionals. The client would have good cause to sue the solicitors for negligence, the burden of which would no doubt fall on their Professional Indemnity insurers. But they'll need to find another firm to conduct the litigation, preferably one who understands that Court Orders are meant to be complied with.
