Does the fact that our Lord Chancellors are no longer lawyers have something to do with the erosion of the justice system? Deeply ironic, in this 800th anniversary year of Magna Carta. Although English law, and the quality and expertise particularly of our commercial judges, enjoys a high reputation internationally, it seems that our courts are increasingly full of wealthy foreigners who can claim jurisdiction on some tenuous ground, whilst our own citizens struggle to afford justice in deserving circumstances. How can an abused spouse - many of them are women - with little or no money obtain justice and assert their human rights in the face of such high fees? Yes, we have to weed out inefficiencies and secure value for public money, but there must be a better way.
