As you know I never like to say anything controversial on here, but could we just ask how much legal aid is costing and what it is being spent on? Take the Iraq torture victims enquiry. That has cost millions in legal aid only for it to turn out that there was no evidence of torture, or rather that such evidence as there was was made up.. And what about the Abul Hanza defence and resisting deportation? This is a bit like saying the NHS should keep on giving even after GPs were given a 100% wage rise by New Labour in return for their agreeing to reduce their hours from 60 to 40 per week and then paying them again for working evening and week-ends. We simply cannot go on affording such largess.
