Most of the civil legal aid certificates I obtained either were cases where the costs were paid by the other side (personal injury mainly), or where the client would be paying due to the statutory charge (matrimonial mainly). Rarely did I end up claiming for all, or even most, of my costs under the certificate. And crime always paid, not greatly I know, but enough for me to continue doing it despite, not because of, the clients for the most part.

The first big cutback I remember was in 1977 when legal aid was withdrawn from uncontested divorce. Then Lord Mackay had his goes in the 1980s and 1990s which Paul Boetang said would not be reversed when Labour came to power "so get used to them, they're here to stay" he told us in one talk I attended in S Wales on franchising. And he was dead right.

"The working class can kiss my a..e,
I've got the foreman's job at last".
