Why use the public sector as an example? Why not look to other professions where flexible working is embraced and does work?

Wherever I have worked, if you regularly leave to collect a child (it's dads too, not just mums), then usually you shift your hours to allow for that or, if it's an emergency, then you take home your laptop and log in later to complete a job. Simple.

Being present doesn't equate to being productive. Just as long hours doesn't mean being more productive. Believe it or not, people with deadlines and enough work to do will and can get it done whether that's in the office or from home.

It's something that many in the legal profession need to get their head around.

Woe betide the man who asks you for his six months' parental leave.
