And amongst the many other scandals David might have mentioned, we have since 1973 been pouring billions per year into inefficient continental farming (mainly French and German) through the Common Agricultural Policy, enabling the Europeans to undercut our own farmers, inflict huge damage on British agriculture, and flood the supermarkets with foreign produce. We pay into the CAP, I believe, about double what we receive back in the form of agricultural subsidies. But because "Europe" dresses up those repayments of our own money as something we cannot enjoy without EU membership - and because it targets them for maximum political effect - we now have the ironical situation where nearly every farmer in west Wales will be voting "Remain" in the belief that he is "better off in Europe". The same propaganda ploy underlies all those worthy social projects you see with the ring of stars prominently displayed - swimming pools, libraries etc. These are "funded" by the EU in precisely the same way that the local authority "funds" refuse collection. Yet most of us don't fall don't on our knees with love and gratitude to the beneficent council. If we were allowed to arrange our own rubbish removal at a cheaper price, we'd probably do it.
