In my view, the decision is not as harsh as it at first appears.
Firstly, LD proclaim to be specialists in acting in large actions for unsophisticated clients in the developing world. That is why and how they attract cases like this. The standard to which they will be held should be a very high one.
The judgement makes plain that, in spite of knowing all about the risk of corruption and fraud in the Ivory Coast, the matter of setting up a secure payment system was left to two paralegals with no experience or knowledge of such matters. In spite of counsel suggesting they do so, no specialist advice was sought.
