When I started, Raynor, in 1973, we also had scale fees for conveyancing and official guidelines for probate work. I think that price cutting is a part of the problem following on from that. As my late father used to tell me "You cannot reward professional services in the same way as factory work". He was a dentist who said that extracting a tooth could be a quick as 30 seconds, or if it broke 30 minutes. A simple sale can take one hour or five hours, you just cannot tell at the beginning. Price cutters assume the simplest transaction and their performance falls off drastically if things become complicated in any way ( and they start to lose money).
