Opposition to the new ABA rule was not just from the cultural right; it was also from the cultural center. If a lawyer is threatened with public, ruinous discipline because he referred without any intentional hostility to a young female as "dear", or committed what some perceive as a "microaggression", there is a real danger that speech has become weaponized for both political purposes, and legal revenge.
