A very sensible proposal.
There is no need for 6 years' training to do conveyancing. 2 years focused training would be sufficient; 3 years max.
A similar period would be enough to train a competent litigator or corporate lawyer.
Same for family law... (and by the way it is odd that solicitors still have a monopoly there, given that the mandatory training of solicitors does not include anything on family law).
Regulation based on practice area rather than professional title would be an enormous step forward.
Long ago the title "solicitor" ceased to tell you anything meaningful about what someone was competent to do. Now we are all specialists in particular fields of law, and regulation must reflect that.
