Have the JLD not heard of market forces? If someone wants to work for six months for free let them. A decent candidate will be picked up by firms and paid. If you can't prove yourself in six months is this the job for you? There are many legal jobs out there, not just in the big firms. We have four people working for us who came to us as students. We have had hundreds of students through the door and given them work experience. Not because we want free staff, but because the local universities ask us to do this for their students. Sometimes our staff are just far too busy to accommodate students, it takes up a lot of our time to supervise them. Proving your worth in a legal environment is crucial, whether you are paid or not just get on with it. We recruit candidates who can prove that law is a vocation for them. If a firm is taking the mick because they expect you to work for six months for nothing then use them for a couple of months, get some experience and move on.
