To my mind nothing has been more striking about the Great Debate (and this has been true for 40-odd years) than the temperateness and rationality with which the anti-Unionists have generally put their case compared with the bitter personalities and wild exaggerations of the majority of EU supporters. The contrast has been very noticeable during and since the referendum campaign, even on these Gazette threads. Surely this says something about the respective merits of the two sides?

Whether it does or not, I concur with David and Mike in wishing one and all a happy new year.
