The down side (or one of the down sides) of this is the inability of part-time judges to gain experience and for the public to benefit from this. It does involve an investment of time and money to recruit and train part time judges (and to appraise them each year or so, may be every 2 years now). To get rid of them after 5 years seems a poor return on that investment. My experience was that my firm was only too pleased to mention to anyone that I was a Deputy DJ but generally privately unenthusiastic and unsupportive about it, so this is not going to encourage other solicitors in a similar position to have a go and find out if they might be suitable for a permanent appointment. Also you have to sit as deputy before you can be a full-timer I think, unless the rules have changed - e.g. Jonathan Sumption, but I wouldn't claim to be in his league!
