Oops Serjeants not Sergeants. Anyway my understanding is that the rise of solicitors (as we are now known) started in the early 1500s no matter that a definition did not appear until whenever. .."

Serjeants, (Order of the Coif) were known much earlier and as early as when the Court of Common Pleas split form the Curia Regis and established itself at Westminster (probably in the 1230's). "Solicitors" later. Though in reality not much more so (probably 1400's). They were definitely there when the Kings Bench was established at Westminster (probably 1440's or so). They were officials keeping the records I understand.
