Is it just me or can anybody else not see how a 'consumer' of one of these vehicles has not suffered any loss once VW have modified their vehicle (for free) to remove the defeat device and make it compliant for emissions.

This looks more like another claims gravy train and an excuse for government, especially the US government, to levy massive fines to assist the treasury but where the level of compensation is negligible. Just a costs exercise for the lawyers!
