PS I take your point Anon 10.11, well I should say points, all of which are good, sound ones. Hence my suggestion that we try a return to compulsory scale fees for conveyancing and probate.

By way of a comparison French notaries charge 0.9% of the consideration for a purchase and 1% for a mortgage. So buy for £300,000 and borrow £200,000 and you pay £2,700 plus £2,000... On those figures even I could afford the time necessary to avoid being negligent. (And they use clerks to do all the work anyway. And yes, I know, they use Euros, but it won't be for long now).
