Whilst clients are more likely to complain than previously the added burden of ever variable targets to justify the lawyer's very right to earn a living compound what is already a perennial source of stress for the legal profession. The law is a business now and partners and directors expect a regular return on their investment in fee earners who are often caught between the needs of clients and those of the firm either of which can collapse careers without warning, often leading to mental and material burnout for those not strong enough to handle the pressure.
