As an LEI underwriter, I have 2 comments (from my own experience anyway). Firstly, if the use of add-on cover to claim legal assistance below £5,000 becomes widespread, insurers will increase the original house or car cover premiums to which the add-on LEI cover attaches as a low-cost extra. Secondly, by making a claim on their policy, the insureds mentioned in the article would have indirectly increased their own premiums for their next year's cover as claims have to be paid for, one way or another. The author (and Law Centres) appear to be advocating using add-on LEI within home, contents or motor cover in the same way as stand-alone BTE cover which obviously costs much more and is a higher risk. If general composite insurers observe this as a developing trend in their monthly claims statistics, everyone's premiums will be pushed up and add-on cover will suddenly cost everyone £100 or £200 (which, of course, no-one will pay). Its original purpose as a once every 20 years emergency cover will have gone due to the loss frequency (claims) going up. Can't have your cake and eat it too unfortunately.
