Job Five, you succinctly summarise the prosecution case. Fair enough. And of that were all every shoplifter would get the same penalty regardless of whether the swag was a box of Smarties or a brace of Rolexes.

But it's not all. The circumstances of the offence(s) as here are important. As also is what offence the prosecuter decides to prosecute.

And then there's the mitigation. As here. Including an exemplary character.

No one is suggesting that Mr Saunder's conduct was not serious. The issue is, should it end his career?

Oddly, I wouldn't necessarily oppose a rule which said dishonesty means strike off - no ifs and no buts. You know where you are. But this is not the rule and so you don't. Which is why I chose my three examples as I did.
