One problem might be getting in on the ground. Costs have been cut so much that the assessment is not fit for purpose. I had a go at the last DDJ exercise and it was a multiple choice test on (mostly) the minutiae of the CPR covering insolvency and divorce.

Now, that may be the bread & butter work of a DDJ, so familiarity is important. But the CPR are easy to look up and get the answer quickly. That's not the skills required of a judge, as pretty much any lawyer can do that.

A better way would be with essays and assessment days. But that's more expensive than running an automatic check on a multiple choice form.
