When I was a junior solicitor, some 40 years ago there were different challenges. We used manual typewriters and had to go in search of ribbons when they ran out. Copying was on a "wet-paper" copier which always ran out of a reel midway through the task. There were no computers and e-mail had not been invented. That somehow took some pressures away. These days there are clients who insist on instant e-mail communication. There is a vast burden of regulation and paperwork and there is a very real spectre of cyber-crime, again, quite unheard of 40 years ago. Are things worse these days or better? Certainly document production is faster but expectations have increased and perhaps e-mail communication does cause juniors solicitors additional stress as these days there is a deficit of thinking time.
