The use of Welsh in courts is an important matter for many of us in Wales. It was banned for over 400 years. Section 20 of the 1535 Act of Union made English the only language of the law courts and said that those who used Welsh would not be appointed to, or paid for, any public office in Wales. This was not repealed until 1993. In fact Welsh has only been an official language for a few years.
As Jonathan Haydn-Williams wrote in his grandmother’s school days pupils who were heard speaking Welsh were often caned. My grandfather was such a person and he refused to teach Welsh to his six children. He told my mother that he did not want his children to suffer at school as he did. I recall as a child that it was considered disrespectful to speak Welsh in front of people who only spoke English. The greater use of the Welsh language is an important matter.
