This is a huge change. First of all law graduates will not be exempt from the Stage 1 exam. So for the first time students will have to achieve a basic common standard of legal knowledge. (When I taught conveyancing I was often astonished how many law graduates, even with 2(1) degrees, simply did not understand land law.)

Second the cost will come down dramatically. The regulation of LPC providers produced a very high cost product. In future if someone is good enough to pass, they will not have to spend £15,000 taking a course they do not need.

When the LPC was introduced there were those of us who warned it would produce low and inconsistent standards (which it did). But I never imagined it would also produce such ruinously expensive courses. It has failed, and this reform is long overdue.
