Dear Mr Cross,

Please, I entreat you not to say anything that could be construed as anti-European if you value your job. You may (as indeed you do) write very intelligently and (for the Law Society Gazette) with commendable open-mindedness. But if you go too far you will be subjected to the same censorship as readers who post oppositional views on issues where serious opposition, even in our liberal profession, is not permitted. And I do earnestly ask you to consider whether applying terms like "adolescent" to the EUROPEAN COMMISSION or intimating that "Europe" may be out of step with the march of history is not sailing dangerously near the wind.
