I'm sorry but I don't understand. Why should this data be published at all?

When a solicitor instructs a barrister, or a member of the public does so under Direct Access, it should be on the basis that this barrister is the best person to deal with this case.

If the BSB need to collect this data to be sure that the profession has the appropriate balance of people (whatever 'appropriate' may mean?) then so be it. I trust that they are also collecting data on faith, ethic origin, gender etc. for the same reason.

But why is anyone even considering putting this data into public domain?

I see no reason why either instructing solicitors or the general public NEED to know.
