There are still a few of us around who qualified in the days of 5 years Articles of Clerkship. A law degree exempted having to do Pt 1 exams, everyone did Pt2s (finals). Pt 1s were far from easy and involved hard-core law - law degrees were far less rigorous.
A law degree is no gold standard and the JLD's concerns are misplaced if the system is well conceived.
There is no need to have an inferiority complex about barristers - we chose and instruct them, and in my day our qualifying exams were superior to theirs.
