We don't know it the stats are comparing like with like: for example if you have a male solicitor with 20 years PQE it would be specious to compare his salary with a woman who is an office manager with 5 years experience.

As a general rule of thumb, The Guardian is probably as reliable a source of good statistical analysis as the Mail is as to whether something causes or cures cancer (pick from rising / falling house prices / immigrants / Princess Dianna (also see the Express) / the Royal fixation of the day is cont. Page 94).

This is not to say that equal or rather unequal pay is not a problem, rather that this is sloppy journalism.

PS I wonder what the gender of the author of this article is, if it was a chap would they be a LG reporter or would he have his name on the article?
