But Barry Turner the point of the referendum was that we would not continue to be bound as before. We are not bound by the laws of other countries with which we do business, we merely agree to sell them products and services which comply with their law. Ditto the EU which is not bound by UK law but may find its trade or otherwise in Britain affected by the operation of our law.

So the fact that we will now continue to have to apply EU data protection law, and presumably be subject to ECJ rulings in this area, is a major departure from what was said pre-June 2016.

Put simply, we are not recovering our sovereignty in this area if we cannot, if Parliament so decide, continue to pass snooping legislation and allow blanket data gathering by our intelligence agencies.
