I don't buy the consented data point at all.

I understand it, but like others below, I doubt that this is true consent once it has been sold on 1 or more times to completely unconnected companies in completely different areas of business.

However, I don't buy it in practice because I am sometimes bored enough to start asking these random callers how they got my details, what their Data Protection and Claims Management registration details are etc... The most common response is that they immediately hang up. Very occasionally I'm passed to a supervisor, who usually then refuse to provide any details as to e.g. their business address; ironically I was once told they couldn't do this because of data protection!

Having said all that, I have little hope that any sort of ban would have any practical effect given the apparent ease with which current legislation is ignored.
