I think we are pretty much on the same side, John, and I entirely agree with you about the supremacy of common law over statute law (let alone EU law). And, politically speaking, I'm against everything that Mr Goldsmith seems to think he stands for. But when it comes to a fugitive from justice like Julian Assange being allowed to address the "International Bar Association" I'm quite sure that Mr Goldsmith's instinct is correct, and I support him. Nor do I have such a low opinion of the common law (which is ultimately founded on common sense) as to imagine that it would, or could, throw a shield around a creature like Assange.
