Stopping distances are the issue...no-one sticks to them and there is far too much tailgating. IF drivers kept to proper stopping distances it would make it much harder for cash for crash gangsters to get away with slamming on their brakes to get the person behind to drive into them...The Police ought to police stopping distances more vigorously I think than speeding whereas they don't seem to bother. If proper distances according to speed are kept then speed in itself (even if over the limit) is less likely to be the cause of accidents. Even if you are travelling at a mere 30 mph but if you are within a metre or so of the car in front and they have to brake suddenly, you are simply not going to be able to stop.
