Ah, the 'quota' argument rears it's head once again.

The positives: a more diverse judiciary (or bar, or partnership statistics). This shows how progressive we are.

The negatives: everyone within the particular subsection of humanity upon whom the quota is focused (females, BAME, LGBT etc.) is seen as possibly only being in such a position to meet a quota. This significantly detracts from those who have attained their positions because of their legal excellence and undoubted quality.

What is the answer? Well, root and branch overhaul. It shouldn't be 'get more female/BAME/LGBT lawyers in to make the stats look good', it should be 'why are these groups currently under-represented and how can we change the system now to make the playing field level?'

Will it be done? No, quotas are easier.
