LS never ceases to amaze. I believe Joe Egan wrongly
deduces from the fact that 40% of people die without a will that somehow "we know there is more we can do to make the process accessible to the public"
Really !
Many of the people who die intestate know they should do a will but many are irresponsible , lazy , stupid or plain superstitious: I can't tell you the considerable number I have had to persuade that " No you're not going to increase your chances of dying now just because you're doing a will .
Often people just don't want to contemplate their own demise . The process is currently accessible .
Sure the public always need education but you can't force someone to be responsible with either their own money or giving it away . If LS is going to interject on these important matters on our behalf they should survey us before sending in their opinion in effect in our name .
Note the politician's catch-all words at the end
"With appropriate safeguards built in " !
Ay there's the rub. Good luck with drafting new safeguards ; the ones we have have been honed over two centuries; if this goes through just wait for the clash between the last minute death bed tweet/ email etc ( sent by whom ?) and the last properly prepared will .
Experienced practitioners currently treat making death bed wills with the utmost caution .
This proposal does not appear to show knowledge of real world practice .
