'...At the firm I trained at the head of HR was obsessed with getting Oxbridge graduates in and even once asked me as a commuter to try and persuade a reluctant prospective trainee (who would also have had a long commute) to join the firm. Given the intense competition for such contracts anyone else expressing any doubts would have had their offer swiftly withdrawn! ..'

They had sense. My mates who trained at 'City' 'Firms' earned (with the hours they were 'encouraged' to put in), the same as a person cleaning the toilets at Charing Cross. They also got very little training (if the principals knew any law of course to divulge to them).

They got good 'training' in preparing trial bundles though -not that that sort of thing could not have been learnt at a CAB (along with more Law and practice), of course.
