I applaud June Ventner's statement. I have been of this view since before I qualified. I am now more convinced than ever that it is a necessary step for lawyers to be united to face the challenges to our justice system and the threats to our fellow citizens' human rights. We would hold far greater sway in society and with policy makers if we spoke with one voice and not be divided and ruled over. It is regrettable that it is the barristers with their sense of privilege and rarely disguised self-perception of some mystical superiority over solicitors that in practice prevents this happening.
