Legal services are not readily commoditisable. Publishing headline prices for things like PI claims, divorce proceedings and litigation would be an entirely fruitless exercise. The cost of the services will vary depending on the facts and complexity of each matter. Clients need to speak with their solicitor prior to engagement in order to arrive at an agreed rate (i.e., a fixed fee or a floating fee with a cap). If a client doesn't like the fee quote, then he/she can look elsewhere. Simple.

Having worked in the sector and procured legal services as a private individual, it's plain to me that Dr Martin's assertion that "consumers [sic] bear the full risk of lack of price transparency" is entirely unfounded. Had Dr Martin experience of working within the sector, she might also arrive at the same conclusion.
